Pressure ¦ Devotional

Scripture: A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”– Luke 6:45

Last year I helped to remove an old kitchen and replace it with a new one. When it came to plumbing in the new taps I had a mini revelation! I bet you didn`t think there might be a spiritual principle to learn from the way taps work? Well there is…

When we turn on a tap we take it for granted that water will immediately come pouring out. The only reason it comes out so fast is because there`s already pressure behind it. If there wasn`t constant pressure, using a tap would be quite difficult! One day you might open it and lots of water would come out, and another day you might find that little or no water comes out.

This got me thinking… What if God wants to open my mouth (and inevitably my heart, according to today`s scripture)? Is there enough pressure? Am I full enough of the Holy Spirit and of the Word of God for it to come gushing out with pressure and power?

We all know how frustrating it is to have a shower with low pressure! Perhaps God would like to use us to shower others with His love, truth, grace and kindness, but sometimes we`re guilty of not storing up the good things in our hearts, or not being full of His precious Holy Spirit.

How wonderful it would be for God to know that He can always count on you and I to have enough pressure in our taps, so that, at any moment of any day, He can confidently open our mouths and know that life-transforming grace and truth will come forth with great passion and power. `Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them` (John 7:38).

Prayer: Father, I thank you that your Word says that rivers of living water will flow out from those who believe in you. I want to be a person who`s always ready to be used by you, and I deeply desire to see your life transforming power at work through me. Please forgive me for the times I haven`t stored up good things in my heart, or when I`ve fed my soul on bad things. Would you help me to only store up good things in my heart, and to make sure that I`m always full of your Holy Spirit. Thank you for the privilege of being your child, and for the adventure of serving you! In Jesus` name, Amen.
